'Broadway On Broadway' now in its 15th year
- 9/6/2006

Over 50,000 spectators were expected to turn out in New York City’s Times Square on Sunday, September 10 for “Broadway on Broadway,” the theatre community’s annual season kick-off. This year marks the 15th anniversary of the event and Tony Award-winner Martin Short served as host. The free concert featured select live performances from virtually every musical currently playing Broadway, including several soon-to-open productions.

“Broadway on Broadway” began in 1992 and originated as a special outdoor party to welcome delegates to the Democratic National Convention in New York. The concert was so successful that it became an annual event, returning in July 1993 and 1994. Beginning in 1995, “Broadway on Broadway” moved to September so that shows previewing in the fall could participate. The event has continued to grow and thrive ever since. “We are celebrating our 15th anniversary in Times Square by producing one of our strongest programs to date,” said Charlotte St. Martin, Executive Director of the League of American Theatres and Producers.

Spectators enjoyed musical selections from popular Broadway favorites including WICKED, MAMMA MIA!, JERSEY BOYS, AVENUE Q, HAIRSPRAY, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, THE COLOR PURPLE, THE DROWSY CHAPERONE, THE LION KING, THE PRODUCERS, RENT, SPAMALOT, TARZAN, THE 25th ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE and THE WEDDING SINGER.

Additional performances from this season’s newest arrivals included COMPANY, LES MISÉRABLES, HIGH FIDELITY, SPRING AWAKENING, GREY GARDENS, JAY JOHNSON: THE TWO AND ONLY and THE TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGIN’.

According to Jan Svendsen, Marketing Director of the League of American Theatres and Producers, the League works with each individual show to determine what musical number is performed. The event traditionally takes place in a concert format with the performers wearing jeans and t-shirts. Even though this year’s “Broadway on Broadway” was not locally or nationally televised, clips of all the performances will be posted online at http://www.BroadwayonBroadway.com. Svendsen feels that having the web component benefits National Touring Broadway because “it’s an infomercial for the shows coming to the national markets.”
