Broadway Across America Congratulates CHICAGO on 10th Anniversary on Broadway - 12/4/2006

On November 19, 1996 CHICAGO opened at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway. Ten years later to the day, the musical, which moved to the Ambassador Theatre in 2003, celebrated a milestone to become the longest running revival of a musical still playing on Broadway. The celebration included an all-star studded reunion of the biggest stars to ever perform in the show along with the company’s original stars Ann Reinking, Bebe Neuwirth, James Naughton, Joel Grey and Marcia Lewis. Walter Bobbie, the Tony winning director, helmed the once-in-a-lifetime event which included a gala fundraiser to benefit Safe Horizons, which helps victims of violence and their families heal and rebuild their lives.

CHICAGO’s story of two real life murderesses and a lawyer who turns them into media celebrities is a page right out of today’s newspapers. The musical is the winner of 6 Tony Awards, including Best Musical Revival, and a Grammy Award for its cast recording. CHICAGO spotlights the Tony Award winning choreography by Ann Reinking in the style of the legendary Bob Fosse, and features the “razzle-dazzle” music and lyrics of master Broadway multi-award winning composers John Kander and Fred Ebb, with book by Mr. Ebb and Bob Fosse.

CHICAGO has been performed around the globe in over eight languages in such places as Milan, Brazil, Moscow, Dubai, Vienna, Australia, Quebec, London, Mexico, Argentina, South Africa and Holland. The show has been on tour in the United States since 1997. The immense worldwide success of CHICAGO spawned the Academy Award winning film version in 2002. But, seeing it live is an experience one will never forget. The jazz, the style, the music, and the dancing all add up to an experience that will exhilarate. CHICAGO is a production not to be missed. And all the reviewers agree. Time Magazine calls it “A Triumph,” Newsweek raves “Smashing” and Entertainment Weekly sums it up by calling CHICAGO “Broadway’s Most Electrifying Show!"
