Hennepin Theatre Trust is pleased to announce its 2007-08 M&I Bank Broadway Across America – Minneapolis season. Celebrating the sounds and splendor of the Broadway musical, the upcoming season features productions that span over 50 years of theatre history and combine audience favorites with the most acclaimed new productions.
“Musical theatre lovers – get ready for an unforgettable season.” commented Tom Hoch, president of Hennepin Theatre Trust. “From the classic sounds of My Fair Lady, to the sheer energy of Jersey Boys, the scope of productions we’ve assembled illustrates the outstanding variety of music and magic found on the Broadway stage. It’s bound to be a season of standing ovations!”
The excitement begins in September with a new romantic musical comedy based on a hit movie. The Wedding Singer will transport audiences back in time with a musical score that pays tribute to the 1980s. See what happens when everyone’s favorite wedding singer, Robbie Hart, gets shot through the heart then falls head over heels again. Autumn also marks the return of a Twin Cities favorite. Disney’s The Lion King, a production that has dazzled audiences around the world since its 1997 premiere at the Orpheum Theatre, will roar back into the Hennepin Theatre District for its third local engagement.
2008 will get off to a great start with a long-awaited two week engagement of Avenue Q. Featuring a cast of people and puppets, this smart, risqué and downright entertaining musical tackles life's most vexing issues with a comic twist. In addition to the newly launched North American tour, the 2004 Tony Award® winner is currently playing open-ended runs in New York and London.
Local audiences will enjoy recent revivals of two Broadway favorites in February. John Doyle's dazzling new staging of Sweeney Todd brings the Stephen Sondheim creation to life as never before seen outside of New York. The show’s actors double as musicians to create an innovative, intimate and ingenious new experience for theatergoers. My Fair Lady makes a trip across the Atlantic, direct from its 50th Anniversary London production and U.K. national tour. Acclaimed British actors Christopher Cazenove and Lisa O’Hare will recreate their acclaimed roles as Professor Henry Higgins and Eliza Doolittle for American audiences.
The season wouldn’t be complete without Broadway’s biggest blockbuster! As previously announced, Jersey Boys will bring the sounds and story of Frankie Vallie and The Four Seasons to the Hennepin Theatre District in March 2008. Minneapolis is one of an exclusive list of cities to host the Tony Award®-winning Best Musical during its first year on the road. Tickets are expected to be in high demand for the production’s five week limited engagement.
