Jesus Christ Superstar, the theatrical masterpiece by legendary writing team Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, is returning to the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis May 2–4, 2008 for a limited engagement of five performances. Starring Ted Neeley and Corey Glover, Jesus Christ Superstar is the first collaboration between Webber and Rice to be performed for the professional stage. It tells the story of the final seven days in the life of Jesus of Nazareth and features such notable songs as “Superstar,” “Everything’s Alright” and “I Don’t Know How to Love Him.” It earned five Tony Award nominations when it first debuted on Broadway in 1971, creating a fan base that borders on a cult-like phenomenon. Tickets are currently on sale. Visit HennepinTheatreDistrict.org for more information.
Set in two acts, Jesus Christ Superstar dramatizes Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, the unrest caused by his preaching and popularity, his betrayal by Judas, the trial before Pontius Pilate and his ultimate crucifixion. The rock opera version of “the greatest story ever told,” this classic musical features the long awaited triumphant return of Ted Neeley in the title role of Jesus. Neeley is best known for his Golden Globe nominated performance in the same role in the 1973 Norman Jewison film version. While he has enjoyed a distinguished career in resident theatres throughout America, appearing in a wide variety of productions from Hair to the works of Samuel Beckett, he is internationally renowned for his work in Jesus Christ Superstar.
Featured in the role of Judas will be Corey Glover, best known for his dramatic stage presence and as the lead singer of the Grammy winning, platinum-selling rock band, Living Colour (with the hit single “Cult of Personality”). Glover has also issued albums as a solo artist, acted in television and movies including Oliver Stone’s “Platoon” and reunited with his Living Colour bandmates for a 2001 tour. Jesus Christ Superstar marks his theatrical debut. Director Dallett Norris (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Can-Can and South Pacific) says, "What could be better than having Ted Neeley, so grand in the film, and Corey Glover on board as we delve into Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s brilliant musical telling of this timeless story. Their idea of setting this tale in terms that immediately resonate with today's audiences is revolutionary. Here we are, twenty-one centuries later, and it is clear that we need the message of this story now more than ever." Already seen and loved by thousands, Jesus Christ Superstar is an exhilarating and significant piece of musical theatre.
