About the Theater

THE COLONIAL THEATRE
Built in 1900, The Colonial Theatre is the oldest continuously operating theatre in Boston. The Colonial was designed by Clarence Blackall and is ideal for both musical and dramatic productions. On December 20, 1900 the opening night of Ben Hur, The Boston Globe proclaimed, "Nothing so beautiful, pictorial and mechanical, has ever been seen before on a Boston stage." During the teens and twenties the Ziegfield Follies played the Colonial eight times, and Irving Berlin's Music Box Revue appeared at least twice. Anything Goes and Red, Hot, and Blue both debuted at the Colonial, featuring theatre legend Ethel Merman. Throughout its history, the Colonial has hosted many world premieres and pre-Broadway productions, including: Porgy and Bess, Oklahoma! and The Merchant of Yonkers (the inspiration for Hello Dolly!) The Colonial remains one of the pre-eminent theatres in the United States, and is a jewel of American Theatre.

Driving Directions

FROM THE NORTH:
Take Route 93 South to Exit 26 (Storrow Drive).
Take Storrow Drive to the Downtown Exit.
Bear to the left across Beacon Street to Arlington Street.
The Public Garden will be on the left.
At the corner of The Public Garden, turn left onto Boylston Street.
Stay in the right hand lane and The Colonial Theatre is located 1/2 a block up across from the Boston Common at 106 Boylston Street.

FROM THE SOUTH:
Take Route 93 North to Exit 20. Follow signs to South Station.
Take a left onto Kneeland Street.
Kneeland eventually turns into Stuart Street.
At the 6th set of lights you will be forced to take a right onto Charles Street South.
After making that right continue straight to the next light and make a right onto Boylston Street.
The Colonial Theatre is located 1/2 a block up across from the Boston Common at 106 Boylston Street.

FROM THE WEST:
Take the Mass Pike East (I90) to exit 22 (direction Copley).
At the traffic light continue straight on Stuart Street and at the 6th set of lights take a left onto Charles Street South.
After making that left continue straight to the next light and make a right onto Boylston Street.
The Colonial Theatre is located 1/2 a block up across from the Boston Common at 106 Boylston Street.

From Storrow Drive
Take Storrow Dr. to the Downtown Exit.
Bear to the Left across Beacon Street to Arlington St.
The Public Garden will be on the Left.
At the corner of the Public Garden turn Left onto Boylston St.
Stay in the right-hand lane and the theatre will be on the right - 2 blocks down from Boylston.

MBTA

Green Line
Take Green Line to Boylston St. stop
Exit Station and cross Boylston St. (towards Dunkin Donuts).
Turn Right on Boylston St.
The Colonial Theatre will be on the Left.

Red Line
Take Red Line to Park St. Station
Exit Station and walk down Tremont St. away from Park St. Church.
Keep the Boston Commons on your right-hand side.
Continue down Tremont until the end of the Boston Commons.
Turn Right on Boylston St.
The Colonial Theatre will be on the Left.

Orange Line
Take the Orange line to Chinatown.
Exit Station and walk up Boylston St. (Towards the China Trade Center)
Cross over Tremont St.
The Colonial Theatre will be on the Left.

Silver Line
Take Silver Line to Boylston St.
From Boylston St follow Green Line directions

Commuter Rail
If you are coming into South Station or North Station from the Commuter Rail you may travel to the theatre by foot (South Station only) or by subway.

From North Station
MBTA- Take with Orange Line (towards Forest Hills) or the Green Line (Inbound) and follow directions above.

From South Station
MBTA-Take Red Line (towards Alewife) to Park St. and follow directions above.

Walking-Exit station and turn onto Summer St (away from river). Continue on Summer St. for several blocks. Summer St. becomes Winter St. (pass through Downtown Crossing) and turn Left onto Tremont St. Continue on Tremont St. until the end of the Boston Common and turn Right onto Boylston St. The Colonial Theatre will be on your Left.

Information for Disability Access Seating Requests
Any patron with a special seating need (visual impairment, hearing impairment, physical impairment, or any other seating concern) may call the theatre directly to make the necessary arrangements to accommodate their specific requirements. It is not necessary for the patrons to come in person to the theatre to secure their special arrangements.

All Disability Access seating arrangements are handled by the theatre Box Office directly. The Colonial disability access line may be dialed directly at (617) 880-2419.

The Colonial Theatre’s TTY number is 617.426-3444.

Note: Patrons with disability access needs may be admitted to the theatre prior to the general public whenever possible. They should speak to an usher at the door and they will notify the management to handle the request.

Note: There is NO elevator in The Colonial Theatre.

The House Staff is able to assist patrons with disabilities.

Wheelchair Access
Wheelchair accessible (and companion) seats are available through the Box Office or by calling the Disability Access line at 617.880.2419. Accessible bathrooms are located off the main lobby.

Handicapped Parking Spots
There are 2 designated handicapped parking spots directly in front of the theatre on Boylston Street. These spots are available for pick-up and drop-off only. There is plenty of parking in the theatre district, convenient to the theatre.

Hearing Impaired Services/Infrared Listening System
The theatre is equipped with an infrared sound enhancement system. Headsets are available at no extra charge in the main lobby. Open Captioned performances are performed for most productions. Visually Impaired

Special seating for the visually impaired is available through the Box Office or by calling the Disability Access line at 617.880.2419. A large print program is also available. See house staff for more information.
